The Souq

16 12 2008

Ook ummm sorry i haven’t posted anything in a long time because i kind of forgot what the website was, but now i found it so here is something we had to write for L.A. class, but it’s only the first draft so it does have mistakes in it, ok here it is:

The souq was over-welled with all this different kind of smells it was as if you were in a perfuse shop and it was bad enough with the taste of dust, sand, and dryness in my mouth. My throat was killing me, it was like someone stabbing me billions of times, but then I convinced my mom to go have ice cream. On the way there, I saw sheep fur, fake designer items that made me laugh, and a person weaving a carpet that felt so soft and silky as the sheep fur we passed a few minutes ago. When we finally got there, we picked our favorite ice-cream flavors and sat down on a chair that was as hard as a rock. While, I was sitting down with my mom I noticed a man making crepes which smelled so good, I noticed how good this chocolate chip ice-cream tastes, and I noticed that the lights in the souq goes on at 5pm, which was kind of a quink-i-dink because the lights in my compound goes on at the same time. (Weird huh?) Oops, there I go talking to myself. Oh there I going again. Anyway, after we finished eating our ice cream we went to some shops to see what we could find. We decided to go into a store with spices or you can say a super market. When we entered, you could instantly smell all this different kinds of spices. It was so so strong I could hardly breathe. (It was torture again.) But, then after a few minutes my mom finally agreed with me and we exited the store like we weren’t leaving because of the strong smell of the spices. So we decided to go to a store that sells clothes and shoes. When we found a store that sold those kinds of items, we enter it. The store was filled with mostly Indian traditional dresses. Most of them had glitter and more glitter. It was like I was in a cave fill of diamonds. After five minutes of looking around we left the shop and ahead to the car. On the way to the car I noticed a group of boys and girls that were about the age of seven drinking coffee, it hilarious my mom and I couldn’t stop laughing. Also, I noticed a little girl who broken her arm, she was so cute I felt sorry for her and I noticed that there was a lot of police in the souq. (I would never think there would be so many.) When we got to the parking lot a saw five Hummers, loads of trucks, loads of buses, like 50 Toyotas, and a lot more. It take us like five minutes to find our car, which I would could not believe, I would have thought it would take us like 20 minutes, but anyway we got into our car and drove off.

Hope you liked it!!!!!!! :)

Also,  a few days I wrote this poem too,  I hope you like it!

I see the river flowingI feel the soft blades of the grass beneath my feetThen I close my eyes

I hear the birds

CERP CERP

I hear the wind

WHOOOSH

And I hear the bees

BUZZ BUZZ

Then I open my eyes

I am alone

Just nature and me

A few days ago I wrote this poem, I hope you like it!

I closed my eyesI braced for pain

I tasted bitterness

I knew the teacher could smell my fear

I held breath as the ruler went into my skin

which left a mark

OWWWWW!! it stung as I opened my eyes

I couldn’t bear it

I thought to myself

Why me?

Why me?

Islam Portfolio Thing

31 03 2008

Hi!

During the caravan days at school, I worked as the Kattib (Secretary) who was responsible for taking notes and documenting important ideas and/or facts. In this role, I learnt more interesting facts about Islam, and how many Muslims there are in various parts of the world. I also learnt from this game to be very careful with my money and wisdom cards, and not to entrust them to anyone.

Wisdom cards are classified into three groups; facts, trivia, and truth. Fact cards contain ideas and statements of facts. Trivia cards contain information about Islam. And, truth cards include important ideas about the Muslim world. Finally, the Quiz cards include questions to test peoples’ knowledge about Islam.

The most interesting aspect about the caravan game is that you experience good and bad things, like life itself. Also, the caravan game is interesting because we get the chance to earn more money which you can use to buy Wisdom cards and other things. I dislike the caravan game because you sometimes loose your money. Also, because one has only a very limited period of time to answer the questions included in the Quiz cards.

In my opinion, next year students should be provided with more time to answer the Quiz card questions. Also, I think that the caravan game sometimes becomes a bit boring for the students because it becomes like a routine. Finally, I think next year we should include more people in the group to make the game more exiting.

The project is to organize an Arab fashion show which shows as many Arabic clothing styles for both men and women. Also, to explain to our audience the various clothing styles and their origin. Also, we had to find out which head accessory is used by people who live in each Arab city. Finally, to select a suitable song for each fashion show.

I believe our group members understood each others very well because we listened well, shared ideas and kept our promises to each other. I also thought that, in certain instances, Sama became a little bossy because she thought she had to take action in order for the group to finalize the project on time.

The trip on the dhow was really fun and interesting. We talked to other people about Islam, we eat Arabic food which included rice, beef, lamb, salad, bread, and special dipping. Also, sharing our project with each other was interesting, especially when we listened to Arabic music and played cards, such as UNO and Spoons. Finally, we swam in the Persian Gulf where the water was very cold, but felt refreshing. Overall, we all had a lot of fun during that dhow trip.

A few important connections can be made between Islam and my experiences on the dhow. Such connections mostly include “Trading; where Muslims used to carry their merchandise on dhows and sail to other countries. Also, “Learning” where Muslims used dhows to sail to other countries, explore other cultures and learn new customs and languages. We learned from each other during the dhow trip by sharing our projects and ideas.

I think the Islam unit was very interesting and I would like to learn more about it in the future. I learned a lot about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Also, I learned that Muslims pray five times a day and believe that if you are good you can go to Heaven which flourish with greenery and waterfalls. Whereas, if you are bad , you will go to Hell where you will burn in the fire and the water you drink will make you even more thirsty than before.

The understanding of Islam impacts my life through out the whole day. Five times a day, the call for prayer reminds me that Muslims must pray in order to strengthen their belief in one god and ask for forgiveness.

I hope you like it!

Bye!

P.S. Sorry Mr.R that you were not here for the end of the Islam unit.

My Birthday

28 03 2008

My birthday was on the 25th and I was so happy, but then I realized that Mr.R was not here I became sad but then I remember what someone said (or Mr.R ) “That life goes on and no matter what happens.”  So I became kind of happy and sad mixed together.
